CHAPTER 9

I did and understood this lesson well but I had some issues with it because when I went to do the custom shapes my photoshop on my computer would not load them. They are missing and only the outlines of my Shape Layers would show up. I also have no OpenGL but put the text in.

CRITIQUE 5

The visual content of this image is the back of a woman facing a person sitting across from her, a brick wall and turqoiuse colored booths.
Three design elements of this picture are texture of the brick wall, direction because of the way the woman and seats are places and probably size in relation to the booths to the brick wall.
The three design principles that are used are emphasis on texture of the brick wall and and the direction the photo makes you look towards the brick wall, proportion of the lady and the wall, and horizontal balance of everything in the picture and then the woman sticking out as vertical balance.
The color scheme is pretty colorful with a big black outline, different reds in the backgound, turqoise, white and gray. I think that the color is used effectively. It's very realistic.
It would be more visually effective if I could see what the woman is looking at but that probably defeats the purpose of the piece.
What draws me in to this picture is trying to see what she is looking at. Her barretts in her hair catch my eye and also they are both holding cigarettes.
I think this photo image is ok. I don't particularly like it or dislike it. It's just kind of boring to me.

CRITIQUE 4

-Betsy SchneiderliThe visual content of this picture is a little girl looking back as she is about to go through a small opening in the fence. The shadows suggest that the sun is going down. The little girl has dirt on her face and a sad or tired look. The color of her clothes and eyes match the colors in the sky behind her.

The design elements used are line because the little girl and fence are vertical. Tone because of the shadows and texture because of the rough wood of the fence.

The design principles are balance of the majority of the fence taking up the picture compared to the small part of the background sky we can see, proportion being the little girl compared to the size of the fence, and emphasis on the little girl.

The color scheme is pretty neutral with the only bright colors being her clothes, eyes and the sky that all go together very well.

The photo is visually effective I wouldn't change anything.

The look and the dirt on the little girl's face draws me in.

I like the image because it reminds me of being a little kid.

CRITIQUE 3

-Uelsmann

The majority of this picture is the roots with the focus being the house that is centered evenly in the picture. It is black and white, very quiet and lonely looking. The roots look like they are going to take over the house and eat it up.

The design elements are direction, vertical line and tone. Tones because of the blacks and grays of the whole picture. Vertical line because of the roots going up towards the house and the house going up vertically towards the sky. Direction because the roots seem to be moving up into the house.

The three design principals that are used are emphasis of the house. Balance of the the subject being centered in the picture. And unity because it has the same mood throughout the whole picture.

The color scheme is black and white and it is used very effectively because the picture is dark and dreary.

I think the photo is very visually effective.

I like that the roots are the bottom of the house and leads your eye up to the house.

I like this photo image a lot. I think it is very creative and works well.

-Parke Harrison

The visual content of this picture is a man with his sleeved rolled up looking down at his arm. It looks like the veins in his arm are coming out as little trees and reaching up towards the light. The light is shining on his arm lighting it up and making his face dark. It looks like it might be light coming in from a window or storm. The blue has a lot of texture in it making it look like rain. This picture leaves a lot to the imagination.

The three design elements are line, texture and color. The line is both vertical and horizontal with the arm being horizontal and the roots coming out of the line vertical. There is a lot of texture in this photo especially the window. The blue color of the window effects the whole mood of the picture.

The three design principles are balance of the positioning of the arm, the proportion of the arm and rest of the body and the emphasis on the roots coming out of the arm.

The color scheme is very has natural colors with a pretty blue window that all works very well together.

I wouldn't change anything in this photo.

The roots coming out of the arm really draw me to this page and make me wonder what it's meant to be. Also, the way he is looking at his arm.

I do like this image it is very interesting and gives you a lot to think about.

CRITIQUE 2

-Dream

The visual content of this picture is a woman looking down at something. She has a glow around her and light is shining on her highlighting part of her. The rest of of the picture is dark and in the shadows. The picture is unclear and dream-like. I can’t see what she is doing with her hands and looking at. The woman in centered in the picture and whatever is behind her is unclear.

The three design elements are tone, texture and shape. The tone makes up the whole highlight and shadows of the entire picture. The texture is whispy and soft. The shape is the area of tone that provide shape for the whole design.

The three design principals are emphasis on the woman. Rhythm of her hair and clothes. Unity of the whole picture flowing together.

The color scheme is black and white. It is used effectively but I think it would look pretty in color as well.

I like the picture the way it is.

The light shining on her catches my eye in this piece.

I like it. I think it is very dream-like and peaceful.

Street Kids

The visual content of this photo is five kids on the ledge outside of a window on the street. They seem to be climbing down while the two at the top over the door look like they are fighting. I love the shape and positioning of this picture. Everything in it seems to flow together and is unrealistic but comical. The building is old and dirty. The door is uninviting and dark so it is cute that the kids are coming out of the window.

The three design elements are line, texture and size. The continuous suggested lines that the kids form. The texture of the dirty brick building. The size of the huge building, doors and pillars compared to the kids.

The three design principals are balance, proportion and rhythm. The balance of the of the kids to the right and then the one on the bottom balancing them out. Proportion of how everything is so huge compared to the kids. And rhythm is the directional pattern that the kids are going.

The color scheme is black and white. I think it is used effectively as it looks like it is an older photo.

I think it is very visually effective and creative. The kids draw me in to the picture and the girl hiding behind the pillar.

I like it a lot.

-Mirror

The visual content of this picture is a bunch of kids by the street half dressed and in torn up clothes. The clothes, windows and street looks dirty. There is a little boy on a tricycle behind the mirror with no glass. He looks like he is going to ride through it. The boys holding up the mirror are not paying attention the boy on the tricycle.

The three design elements are color, size and line. Color is black and white and helps the photo look more real. Size is how huge the mirror is and line is the diagonal direction of the street and buildings.

The design principals are balance being the mirror. Proportion of the size of the mirror compared to the little kids and emphasis on the mirror.

Black and white color used effectively.

The kids that looks like he is going to ride his bike through the window draws me in.

I don't really like the photo image. It's a mess and doesn't really make sense to me.

Tread 3

The visual content of this photo is a woman standing looking into a brok-en piece of glass or the wall and seeing a man in it looking back at her. The wall looks torn up and dirty but the people look dressed up and neat. It looks like light is coming in from the side highlighting the woman’s arm and side of her face. She seems to be looking right at the man that we see behind her.

The design elements are tone, texture and direction. Tone being the overall darkness of it. Direction in the way she is looking at something in her hand reflecting the man behind her looking at her. Texture of the wall and how part of it is ripped off.

The design principals are balance being the woman in the right-front of the picture. Proportion of the size of the woman compared to everything else. Emphasis on the man looking back at her in the mirror or wall.

Color scheme is black and white and works but I think it would be pretty in color.

The man looking at her catches my eye. It makes me want to know more about him and the picture.

I really like this picture and wouldn’t change a thing.

-Tread

The visual content of this photo is a flower with a rock tied to it. The pot that the flower is planted in is not in focus while the rock and the actual flower itself are very crisp and clear. They are sitting on top of what looks like a wood rough wood table. The picture makes me wonder why a rock is tied to the stem of the flower.

The elements are size, line and texture. The size of the flower. The vertical line of the flower and the line the string makes. The texture of the wood table it is sitting on.

The principals are balance being the right side, the flower, being so big and then the left side, the rock being so small. Proportion of the plant to the rock. Emphasis on the parts that are crisp and not blurred.

It is black and white, very pretty, works with picture.

The crisp parts draw me in, I like it.

-Emergency

The visual content of this picture is a little boy in the drivers seat of the truck looking out the back window as the truck is driving away. You can tell from the snow under the truck that it is either moving of there is a big snow storm and appears to be raining pretty hard. The red truck sticks out in the dreary snow covering the ground and sky. I like this picture and the name “Emergency” a lot.

-Boy

The visual content of this picture is a boy standing with a grenade in his hand is that the shape of his body is the same as the tree behind him. It took me a minute to see the grenade in his hand. He is making a face and holding his other empty hand like he has a grenade in that one too. There is a lot of shadows on the ground from the trees and the sunlight showing through the leaves.

-Identical Twins

The visual content of this picture is twin girls dressed up in dresses, tights and bows in their hair. There arms are straight by there sides the same way they are standing. The first thing I noticed was their eyes. They look creepy and unnatural to me. I would like the picture better if the girls were playing or in some more natural position than standing there with their arms straight up and down.

CRITIQUE 2

-Golden Arm

There are a lot of rectangles in this picture. Everything is very simple and solid. It is names “The Man With the Golden Arm” but the arm sticking down into the middle of the picture is black and the lettering is gold. The whole picture is straight and angular as well as the font. I really like that the font goes so well with the picture.

-Afternoon

This is very simple and I love how it is all put together. It looks like a square black window shade with the seam horizontal at the bottom . All the words, which are the actor’s names, are also horizontal matching the name of the movie. The hook in the shade is vertical like the window shade.

-Dylan

The use of white and black space in this picture is really neat. There is a figure of a person with very colorful wavy hair. The hair sticks out a lot and seems to be the focus of the picture although the black outline of the face against the white background really stands out too

-Man On the Moon

This is a Life magazine cover with most of the picture being the moo. The focal point is the reflection in the face part astronaut’s suit. It reflects what he is seeing on the moon and looks cool because the edge of the reflection and the edge of the moon we see runs together. Most of the picture is white with a black background representing space. I like that the words “to the moon and back” are in a linear positition like the astronaut and the word “Life” is horizontal like the edge of the moon. The whole picture is red, white and, blue and black and very much represents the United States with those colors and the flag on the arm and reflection.

-Esquire

This is a magazine cover for Esquire picturing a open can of tomato soup with a man stuck in the soup reaching out. He looks like he has a white wig on and might be a political figure. The colors are red, white and black with Esquire at the top in big bold black lettering.

-Beggarstaff Harper

This looks like line art. The dominant color is red. It incorporates the background into the picture and actually makes the red the mans body without actually doing anything. It looks like a magazine cover or add for an Artistic Supply Company. I like how you can tell what it is from the red background even though it’s just a few lines that don’t really make a whole picture.

CRITIQUE 1

-Beggarstaff

In this photo there is an older man on a horse that looks like something scared it. The horse has it’s ears back and tail between his legs. He seems to be looking at the dark object in the background. In the upper-right hand corner there is some writing in another language that I don’t know what it says. The whole picture really doesn’t make any sense to me and I can’t figure out what the object in the background is. It is very simple with outlines and lines and just 3 basics colors. Overall, I don’t really like it but maybe if I had any idea of what it is maybe I would.

-Audrey Hepburn

This is a magazine cover featuring Audrey Hepburn sitting on the floor in just a men’s collard shirt. She is looking at you while she talks on the phone which you can only see the cord but looks like it is also sitting on the floor near by. The focal point is her gaze. You are drawn to her eyes because it seems as though she is looking at you because you disturbed her on the phone. The photo is black and white and the magazine logo and footer is in red and white. The position of her body, her gaze, the phone and the wall make the photo linear. I love the picture but I don’t think that the black and white looks very good with the red. I think that the red takes away from the photo and makes it distracting.
